RE: Many products

Where I live the power goes out a dozen times a year, sometimes for over an hour. This is due to drunks crashing into poles, ice storms bringing branches down onto trees, and lightning strikes tripping breakers. Every few years or so the power goes out for a couple of days. The last time was in a flood which destroyed homes, businesses and bridges down in the lower part of the valley's. (This was a 100 year flood.)

I run some servers that have non-ACID database software, so if the system crashes the database is often scrambled and has to be rebuilt from backups and transaction logs, a slow process. If I were just playing music, I would probably not worry much, because all the modern file systems are (supposedly) safe from system crashes. However, even so, every time one shuts down a system improperly on is trolling for bugs and if one has a special talent for hitting them (as I do, and it's a useful talent if one does any software development) then there is still cause for worry. For example, I do not trust SSD firmware with respect to system crashes. The better products are probably OK, but who knows what greedy corporate management will do when it comes to meeting quotas and deadlines.

I suspect I can substitute a different fan in my UPS and reduce the noise somewhat. There appear to be firmware changes that help, but unfortunately the firmware can not be updated in the field.
