According to what John Swenson said, the original problem with USB DACs was found to be the USB receiver circuitry which created more noise on low quality input signals. The Regen has its own USB receiver circuitry and this creates more noise when the Regen gets an inferior signal than when it gets a better signal. The isolation inside the Regen is not perfect, therefore the noise created on the input makes it to the clock and output circuitry, thereby carrying a certain amount of the original noise pollution forward. Bits are polished, but not perfectly.
This is the theory at least. There isn't a need for multiple cables, as the physical construction of the Regen allows for them to be connected with stub USB cables, possibly with one or more Regen's connected directly to the DAC, depending on other cabling. With these hard "cables" there are also issues of physical support, etc... so one may need to use very short cables such as what fmak was looking for. (There are problems with short cables if the physical layout requires any bending, because of bend radius limitations. I have had short USB cables fail for this reason.)
Of course having a whole bunch of these devices does look like a kluge. If it sounds good, that's all that matters. But then computer audio as a whole looks like a kluge compared with a one box CD player. :-)
