You could be right. It could be a lower resolution master upsampled or it could be played and the analog captured at a higher rate. It's hard to tell from a static screen shot. It's easier if one has the file and can listen and zoom into interesting portions, see various fades and/or edits, etc...
There are many possibilities one could speculate about, but it would be pointless. What matters is how the recordings sound, not how they "measure". However, I would not advise using tracks with these kinds of artifacts as the source of material to be used in format comparison tests.
