The most likely explanation is that "Exact" mode deliberately disables (or possibly inadvertently butchers) the asynchronous operation.

It seems unlikely that sending the clock feedback would degrade sound quality. So I am betting that there is some kind of a performance "bug" that is responsible for the sonic degradation that is avoided in "exact" mode. The design engineer is probably confused as to how the system works. If so, this would not be the first time that clock synchronization has confused engineers.
