It does help to have developed your palette. Many of my "foodie" friends are also excellent cooks.
With wine it's more difficult because of the multiple-year lag time between making the wine and its maturation. However, even here there are benefits from specialist training and experience. A friend who owns a local wine shop is working on her levels as a Sommelier, a lot of knowledge tests plus taste tests.
