RE: Here in lies the problem

Back when the EMI remasters came out, I read the web page you linked. I have no problem with doing the restoration in PCM. I don't believe it would have been possible to do it with DSD, as I am unaware of any suitable software. Furthermore, multiple passes are required as part of the restoration workflow, and multiple passes through DSD64 is generally a bad idea. My problem was that they used 96/24 rather than 192/24. Or more to the point, my biggest problem was that they overdid the restoration. (This is a very subtle point, as it is very easy to do a restoration that sounds excellent with listened in 2-3 second sound clips as in a typical blind test, but which sounds unnatural when listened continuously. The issue isn't how the notes sound, it's how the notes fit into the acoustic environment.)

As to resampling to DSD. If the product is to be a spinning coaster, then the choice is between 44/16 and DSD64. A conversion from 96/24 to DSD is likely to sound better than a conversion from 96/24 to 44/16. Fortunately, the 96/24 master files with restoration were retained and that's what HDtracks sold me. I played these through my Mytek either directly at 96/24 or by upsampling to DSD128, which sounds slightly better. (I use the latter option only in the winter when my listening room is around 65 degrees F, because in the summer the processing required by HQPlayer to do room correction uses so much CPU that the cooling fan spins fast enough that I can hear it unless the room is cold.)
