RE: There is no "system engineering" of consumer audio.

If you look at the PHY level specifications for computer signaling standards, such as various flavors of Ethernet and USB you will see a level of details as to required electrical properties of the transmitters, connectors, cables, receivers and clocks that are missing from most signal wiring used with audio. Examples would be the humble RCA connector, or amplifier - speaker wire - speaker interface.

There are no specifications for how transients are to be managed at system power up and power down, which leads to various failure scenarios with certain equipment if the user powers up or down his equipment in the incorrect order or if there are glitches in the mains power supply.

In the case of Red book there is no specification on how the digital filtering used on recording is to interact with the digital filtering used on playback. There is no definition of what constitutes a legal sequence of Red book PCM samples, leading to problems with clipping in digital and analog filters in DACs.

The are standards for how component performance are measured, but these are outdated and do not take into account known psycho-acoustic perception.
