Bandwidth in a data center or a home is cheap. The end points are cheap and the wires are cheap. Not so where there is a monopoly service involved. There are huge capital costs associated with providing service to everyone and paying off politicians, unions, etc... There is no Moore's law of politics. Even if it were just technology, the bandwidth for the last mile is going to cost considerably more than the bandwidth for the last 100 feet... Keep in mind in 10-20 years the costs of storage will have come down at least as fast as the costs of bandwidth. There will still be a 5 to 10x cost difference between downloads and interactive because of the reuse factor and the peak load factor.
The real problem with cloud based services is the likelyhood of an eventual dystopian future, where all the data of the entire society is centrally controlled in the cloud by the powers that be.
