That is literally true. There are only two gotchas: first, if the computer sends along any noise the DAC will have to filter it out. That can be done. Second, when the bit is played the timing is critical. Therefore if the computer doesn't send the bit at exactly the right time the DAC will have to take up the slack and make sure that it gets played at the right time. That can also be done. The problem is that most existing DACs don't do these two steps perfectly. For example, with respect to the timing, it will need to be accurate to a few picoseconds for timing errors to be inaudible.
