RE: Audioquest Ethernet cables, conclusion

Interesting. Shielding adds a new dimension. Given that there is galvanic isolation on both ends of the cable and the signaling is differential there is certainly no need for the shield being attached to both ends. But it would be sad if we ended up with varieties of Ethernet cables, a mess that existed in the early days of twisted pair with problems of "cross-over" and "polarity" that were eventually fixed by smarter chips.

I would have thought that connecting the chassis ground to the shield on both ends would create a safety hazard on long cable runs between devices served by two electrical panels (or one panel during lightening strikes). I haven't looked at the Ethernet physical layer specification lately, but I would hope that it addresses this issue. I see that others have similar concerns.
