You've hit on the issue, as I see it. I have a Mytek DAC and that requires a custom driver. These are available for Windows, OSX, and Linux, but the Linux drivers are available only for Intel platforms. The problem is that the drivers are proprietary to the company that wrote then and the source code is not available. They have not been compiled to work against the Linux Kernel on the ARM hardware used by the Raspberry Pi. (Or at least the last time I looked.) I could use the USB 1.0 connection for low speed and low quality audio from the PI to the Mytek, but this is probably not something I want to try.
I know that my Intel NUC will work with the Mytek using Linux, not requiring anything more than a few GB or RAM and the built-in 4 GB or solid state storage. This is a 10 watt solution and will run Linux or other software such as HQPlayer Network Audio Adapter. This Mytek driver situation is somewhat annoying, because if there were an open source driver for the Mytek, I would already have compiled it for the Arch Linux OS that I run on the Raspberry Pi. I no longer need the Pi, as its server role has been replace by the more powerful Nuc and I would like to repurpose it for something else.
I am fully prepared to compare kernal drivers for Arch Linux or other Linux that run on the Pi, having some experience already with software development on this platform. I can say that Ubuntu is a much more friendly distro to use during the development phase, but it leaves a lot of baggage about that needs to be stripped out before using it in an embedded application. (All of the user software such as Firefox, Mozilla, Libre Office, and all of the windowing software as well are not needed for a server which needs just the server applications and shell access via SSH.)
