The problem has been the ADCs. At least until recently the best sounding ADC was the Grimm AD1 and it only runs at DSD64. When I listened to Bruce Brown's DSD shoot off I compared all the DSD64 and DSD128 tracks made from the same analog tape playback and different converters. The AD1 beat all the other converters running at DSD64, most by a big margin. As far as I could tell, none of the DSD128 ADCs beat it, but I didn't spend a lot of time in this listening.

You might try playing around with HQPlayer. If your computer is fast enough (mine isn't) you can use it to upsample DSD to higher rates as well as perform processing functions such as volume control and room correction. If you are going this route (including converting PCM to DSD) and your processor is fast enough then the higher speed DSD may be advantageous. If you do real-time DSD conversion at least you won't need to buy stock in Western Digital. :-)
