RE: Archimago-Pono

The existence of frequencies well above 20 kHz in excellent recordings shows that there must be filtering before digitization at low sampling rates, otherwise there will be aliases, which will be frequencies that are not harmonically related to the musical notes. The biggest problem is almost certainly the effect of these filters on sound quality, rather than the absence of the higher frequencies in reproduction. Recording filters are the most critical because their failure to filter results in frequencies in the audible range (below 20 kHz). Playback filters in DACs or computer upsamplers are less critical, because if they don't filter out the necessary frequencies the spurious frequencies will be above 20 Khz.

If the sampling rate is increased to 192 Khz there is no need to filter out frequencies below 96 Khz. This allows for recording filters that roll off very slowly, starting gradually above 20 Khz. This improves the transient response of the filter and hence the imaging and sound stage. If a 44.1 kHz filter is used then filters will either leak and hence alias, ring for a long time, or start rolling off well below 20 kHz and hence affect air and tonality.

FWIW, people who can not hear sine waves above 13 kHz can hear differences between filtered and unfiltered high resolution music. As to those people who say other people can't hear anything, they are arguing from their own deafness or ignorance. They have no basis for saying what other people can or can not hear. Their religion is willful deafness.

To hear differences you will need four things:

1) a suitable recording
2) a decent, not necessarily a "high end" system.
3) an open mind
4) training and/or experience.
