RE: ETHERNET CABLES: I'm losing it

Because Ethernet transmissions are paketized, the audio data format doesn't make any difference as far as the cable is concerned. What matters is the Ethernet speed, which is going to be 100 Mbps on any modern wired runs (unless some crazy green power saving nonsense is in effect).

The cables are antennas, and this will affect radiated EMI.

Even if no noise coupling is involved (through cables, through the air or through power wiring) variations in the computer, routers, etc. may change the timing of packet transmissions. This will change the timing of packet processing at the last Ethernet hop. Packet processing creates electrical noise and this may get coupled into analog equipment, especially DACs with their sensitive clocks. Therefore changing cables may affect sound quality, but it is because of a defect in the analog/digital "wall". It may or may not be expeditious to tweak a cable rather then getting better isolation. However, once the cabling starts costing more than the devices that are supposed to be isolating, the situation becomes insane.

In addition, if the analog audio components are bothered with noise, then sound quality is going to be reduced even if all of the digital audio computers are up to date, because other appliances, LED lighting, etc. all create similar noise, not to mention nearby computers.

There will never be completely satisfactory digital audio playback until the entire analog portion of the playback chain is thoroughly isolated.
