Research in lamp cords undoubtedly took place, but this was well before my time.
USB, like Ethernet, comes in different flavors that require different cabling. Most of my Ethernet cables are lowly cat5. Recently I bought a whole bunch of 7 foot CAT 5 cables for $3.00. If I were running long runs then I would go to higher grade, as I would if I were streaming audio. Cat 7 is shielded, a good thing in some environments.
You can read the Ethernet specifications if you are really curious about the technical specifications of the various Ethernet cables, as required for 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 1000 Mbps and 10 Gbps.
