Carcass - If you think this topic warrants a public blind test, I'm happy to get a survey going as I have done in the past on my blog. I'm sure we can get > 100 responses and let's have a look at the stats.

I'm also happy to trim the files so they're a reasonable length to download off my FTP server for distribution and make sure there are no obvious anomalies. Assuming you believe that by cutting the file (offset changes) and/or adding a bit of fade in/out at the start and end, maybe encoding to FLAC doesn't materially change the sound quality from the original ripping process.

Let me know... Happy to help out if doing this can provide an opportunity to settle any issues. Just provide the files and let me know what I can/cannot do and I'm sure we can get this tested out in a controlled/blind fashion!
