It does make sense to use low power hardware running a light weight operating system to interface a DAC to a network. Some of the same chips are available without unnecessary cell phone radio and expensive touch screen display, saving power consumption and associated noise, not to mention money. Probably a bad idea to have any kind of radio, including wi-fi connected directly to an audio stack. However, indirectly via a router might be OK so a cell phone or tablet could still be used as a remote control.
