Huh! My playback software is HQplayer. This software changes the bits in the file and sends different bits to my DAC, thereby (what I consider to be obviously) improving the sound that I hear. BTW, the last time I checked iTunes on a Windows platform it was not bit perfect, but iTunes sucked so badly that I ceased running it years ago so my information may be out of date.
There are three ways that HQplayer might improve the sound. The first is that it uses better upsampling filters than the Mytek, which are built in to the ESS SABRE chip. The second is that it can convert from PCM to DSD128, thereby bypassing portions of the SABRE chip that appear to degrade the sound. The third is peculiar to my setup, in that I use HQPlayer to perform room correction in the bass, thereby reducing three room modes and making bass lines more accurate. The room correction also has an unexpected benefit of expanding the sound stage beyond the boundaries of my room. Many people who have used HQPlayer with SABRE chip based DACs have reported similar results. The downside is that HQplayer eats up a lot of CPU when it is processing DSD and this causes the fan to spin, etc... It would probably not run without overheating or glitches on fmaks audio PC.
