The audio sits in FLAC format on an internal 4 TB hard disk. When I select a set of tracks, e.g. a complete album, I use dBpoweramp to convert the files from FLAC to WAV. dBpoweramp reads the FLAC files, with the data going over the SATA cable to RAM. dBpoweramp converts to WAV and then writes the resulting files to a RAM disk, with the data going over the motherboard.
After this has been accomplished, HQPlayer reads the files off the RAM disk and sends them to the DAC via USB. While the music is playing the hard drive is idle and no data goes to or from it. Indeed, the drive could be powered down if desired or the SATA cable unplugged. It is common for the hard drive to be spun down.
