Gordon probably has, or will have, the tools necessary to diagnose this problem. It is not necessary to treat the system as a complex black box if you have the necessary tools and docmentation. There is no magic involved in data errors, but they can be caused by some combination of hardware, firmware, software and environment.

In some cases, software that is supposed to "optimize" some portion of the system can do such a good job that it provokes latent bugs in hardware or firmware. The optimized software might work better with other hardware. This is no different than blaming the screw thread when the problem was with a nut that was out of tolerance. Because of this possibility, I do not view Gordon's comments as a recommendation for or against any computer operating system.
