Failing to hear a difference does not necessarily reflect negatively on the system used. It could be that the listener lacked sufficient training in what to listen for.
Hearing a difference does not necessarily reflect positively on the system used, either. Inaudible differences can be magnified to audibility by artifacts of the system used for playback. (There are techniques to minimize these artifacts in DACs, but these are seldom used for cost reasons or because they impact the numbers on spec sheets.)
