SPDIF can not support the higher data rate DSD and PCM formats that are coming into use and which are now supported by some DACs, e.g. DSD256, DXD, 768Khz/32 bit, etc... There are good reasons for doing digital signal processing outboard from the DAC and sending a higher datarate stream to the DAC. These formats are interesting even if little or no music has been released in them.
