You have concisely stated the problem with these packaged systems, if not all of computer audio. If the goal is good sound and reliable operation one will have to either pay up or use a DIY approach that requires somewhat uncommon levels of computer hardware and software skills. I see little prospect of this situation improving so long as DACs remain sensitive to noise and jitter on their input signal and power.
There are DACs being marketed to the high end and where the manufacturer believes (or claims) that the DAC is totally immune to its USB input and where there are customers (or sock puppets) who support these claims. See the link below for one example. With such a device (assuming not unobtainium) one could use a $100 ARM computer as a streamer with an open source image.
