RE: Yeah

More on your winking smilie... ;-)

RFI affecting digital systems is not a myth. Data transmission systems don't suffer from RFI only because they have been engineered to avoid them. For example, in the 1960's I know of a computer system that suffered from repeated crashes. Eventually after many service calls the cause of the system crashes was tracked down to data transmission errors caused by a nearby broadcast tower (FM or TV, I don't recall which).. In the case of various generations of Ethernet technology careful engineering consideration was given to RFI and EMC issues.

Another myth is that digital systems don't cause interference with analog systems. This one hardly qualifies as a myth. Indeed, my late wife complained bitterly about the interference to her AM radio reception when my computers were powered on. There are many cases of record players receiving interference from broadcast stations. Indeed, as a teenage ham I received a few complaints. Even today, my analog components suffer from interference when a cellphone is transmitting nearby.

Given this situation, the burden of proof is with those who claim that Ethernet cables don't affect audio equipment. Personally, I don't think there is much point in debating the point, since the cost of the highest category Ethernet cables in typical lengths used by audiophiles is utterly insignificant. Using cheap Ethernet cables in a networked audio system is foolish, unless perhaps one has them already "pulled" through existing walls and doesn't want to incur labor costs.
