RE: WHY convert PCM to DSD?

"Did you know the ESS chips convert DSD back to PCM before outputting to the modulators?"

You're kidding right? I guess you never read my posts on this forum.

This question is borderline dishonest, implying that the conversion inside the ESS chips somehow might degrade the sound, such as happens with some home-theater gear and download web sites when 2822400/1 is downsampled to 176400/24. This is not what happens in the ESS chip, where the initial conversion is to 2822400/32 which is a completely lossless conversion from 1 bit PCM to 32 bit PCM.

You do realize that DSD as well as all the common "PCM" formats are all pulse code modulation, a series n-bit numbers, each one specifying one of 2^n possible signal values to be realized at equally spaced intervals of time? These values are converted into electrical signals and then put through a low pass filter. It's all pulse code modulation, and various word lengths are used inside the ESS chips, e.g. 1, 6,8,16,24 and 32.
