Your arguments are all very well and good, but there are some points that you left out about those DAC chips that are "optimized" for PCM. My Mytek DAC uses a SABRE chip and allows control over some of the chip's features, such as the PCM upsampling filters. I use HQPlayer in my computer. There are four ways that I can play a 44/16 PCM file: (1) I can send 44/16 direct to my DAC, (2) I can use my computer to convert 44/16 to 176/32 and send that to my DAC, (3), I can use my computer to convert 44/16 to DSD64 and sand that to my DAC, and (4) I can use my computer to convert 44/16 to DSD128 and send that to my DAC. These four ways all sound different. In order of preference, best to worst, I have found them to be (4), (2), (3) and (1).
