"'Would you then, sir, pay for a placebo if it only gave you the PERCEPTION of better sound?' to which the guy replied: 'Well, sure, because real or imagined, perception is all I have to go by anyways...'"
The person paying for the placebo is half-way there. He realizes that it's his mind that is creating his perceptions, but he hasn't yet learned to control his mind and thereby control his perceptions, especially the interpretation of a perception as "good" or "bad".
If one has ego attachment to an incorrect perception it may be very hard to change one's mind as this would amount to admitting the mistake. However, changing an extraneous factor can provide an excuse that the situation has changed and therefore a new perception is appropriate. This will allow reaching the correct perception without admitting a mistake. Now at least the perception is correct, but there is still a way to go as the ego attachment remains and similar scenarios can be expected in the future.
