Simon, since you already have the computer partitioned between OS/apps on SSD and data like music on the HD, why not reformat and reinstall the SSD with Win 7, grab the newest updates, reinstall the MSB driver (is there an ASIO driver?) and firmware. I find I reinstall every couple years just because of stupid registry issues or driver problems.

As others have said - there should NEVER be drop outs if it's working properly and the computing power needed to do essentially anything audio these days should be miniscule unless you're running digital room corrections off the CPU. This includes DoP which puts more burden on the USB data transfer than the CPU itself. (You didn't mention what computer you have - hopefully not an Atom!)

I'm not a fan of fancy USB cables and have run into troubles with them in the past. Just make sure you have a decent quality USB cable to try in case you still run into troubles after all that.
