Paul - seriously... Don't sweat it!

Since I just bought an NAD M51 to form the basis for an all-digital front end, the lack of DSD support so far from NAD has been maddening. But I always intended the NAD for a separate 2-channel system in the LR, and I can probably get the Mrs to sign off on an Oppo as a separate item for the HT. Then, I can run analog outs to the Onkyo and enjoy some multi-channel DSD when the urge strikes. I think a lot of us want to dip our toes in, it's just logistical. And prices. I am unwilling to pay $30 for a DSD multi-channel download. Ever. Recording need to become available that are compelling, but not necessarily priced out-of-market. This is probably the biggest reason that I never invested much in SACD discs. There just was never a compelling reason to spend the premium for questionable remasters of content that didn't speak to me. It's a brilliant move for Oppo, because as you say, it really does address the chicken/egg issue.

Seriously, Paul, you got a great DAC (M51) there, what's the problem? Firstly, as many have already noted, there's not enough good music on DSD for most genres. Secondly, this whole drive towards DSD is IMO yet another attempt to get folks worked up to upgrade.

DSD64 in the form of SACD has been around for more than a decade and it really hasn't set the world on fire... Other than the relatively few audiophiles (compared to vast ocean of music lovers) touting it along with the handful of specialty music outfits and PR mouthpieces (audiophile press).

Hard to hear that a guy owning a state-of-the-art DAC is "maddened" by the lack of a feature which really is IMO more hype than substance.
