RE: a little experiment re: clockspeed, etc.

True Tony. However, the problem is if we have to go through such contortions to detect anomalies using ++++ FFT bins (even more than the > 100K points I'm looking at right now), keeping regular periodic activity, etc... then what is the significance of jitter in "real life" with actual music?

As it stands, I (my wife, my kids, 2 audiophile friends I've had over to try) have not been able to AB differentiate jitter of 2-3ns with my existing methodogy and gear (Logitech Transporter +/- Behringer DEQ2496 to introduce TosLink jitter through digital loop, SimAudio integrated amp, Paradigm Reference Signature S8 speakers in treated room). I've also tried with Sennheiser HD800 headphones and can't tell the difference there either...

Of course this is not saying jitter is never audible, but practically, I can't get excited about it anymore after going through my own objective and listening tests. It's a great scapegoat for advertisers to point to as a potential 'ill' in digital gear, but I suspect the days when it actually was a problem in reasonably priced gear was maybe > 5 years ago (more recently with USB DAC's since the common availability of asynchronous USB).

IMO, better to spend time listening to music these days than feeling insecure about reasonably priced gear.
