iTunes is a longterm bull, music industry longterm bear.

I think the above is obvious.

MOST people cannot tell the difference between MP3/AAC with lossless.

MOST people do not care what format their music is in.

MOST people do not want to pay money; especially during sketchy economic times.

FEW new albums are good (IMO) especially when there are decades of good music already in existence you can easily access and listen to. Many of the good albums are indie and not pushed by major labels anyways.

FEW remasters or new albums are worth downloading because the mastering is more than likely too loud, compressed with minimal dynamic range. To make matters worse, even places like HDTracks do not provide details as to what their source is and whether the DR is any good.

IMO, Pandora's box opened more than a decade ago. Other than catering to a small proportion of music consumers willing to have some physical in hand, there is no chance this trend will change in any significant way. iTunes is here to stay.
