TosLink, jitter and reality testing...

"Hi !
well an important variable is the level of acceptance of the listener
For my mother even a crap old radio is fine
I am more picky I suppose"

beppe,
No. It's not a matter of acceptance but that of physiology and reality testing.

Claims like TosLink making audio sound like "crap" (ostensibly due to 1ns jitter and assuming the person hooking this up is technologically savvy enough to not screw things up) is like me going on to a sports forum and claiming I can run the 100m "easily" below 9.9 seconds and not get laughed out or challenged (unless of course I were Usain Bolt). That of course doesn't mean nobody in this world can do it, but you better have young ears with excellent high frequency response to do it! I'm pretty sure there are few teenage girls hanging out at a place like this.

Like I said before, I hope you find an answer to your noise issue. I don't think it's that hard to get a good sounding PC/computer system. TosLink vs. coaxial IMO has nothing to do with this. Have a good listen to a good DAC between TosLink and coaxial and see what you think. I'm obviously on the side of there being no difference whether you're listening to 16/44 or 24/96 - bring your mother, father, significant other, brother, sister, friend for a listen... Bring some alcoholic beverages and truly make it a night to remember :-)

I see we're straying from your original question so I will not comment further on this in the thread.
