I believe the Sonos is capable of native decoding of FLAC; I suggest you encode music at the highest (usual) FLAC level of 8 and stream that. Looking at the spec sheet, it looks like Apple Lossless also supported but usually the FLAC encodes are smaller (and hence less demanding of the network).

If FLAC level 8 still fails (ie. stutters, buffering pauses...), then you really need to get a better wireless system - ie. more powerful router, better antenna, range extender for the home, reposition the router closer, or run wired (or Powerline ethernet as I do for my Squeezebox system).
