RE: And what does that say?

"Linn Classical has a "one track per day free", and I liked the one about a week ago (Symphonie Fantastique--reasonably wideband with variety)

I download it in 24-bit 96Kwords/sec. I wanted to manually downgrade the encoding stepwise until I could hear a difference. So I first did the maximum change---using LAME 3.99 on -V0, downsampling to 44.1, then re-upsampling back to 96K so it would be the same for the DAC.

I used the foobar2000 ABX plugin component. I figured I'd at least be able to hear this with all the processing. Well, using even the *sighted* test on the plug-in, when I could listen to any segment exactly against the same segment with the other condition---I couldn't hear anything different. I tried a few segments with frustration. Just for yucks I started the blinded test---on the first three I got 0/3 correct, and I felt I was guessing every time, with no way to answer one vs the other."

Thanks for the input Chaos and nice little experiment. I've done this over the years as well. It would be nice to run a survey like this on the Internet with hi-res music and extreme manipulation of the audio data (hi-res --> MP3 --> hi-res again) but one would be even more prone to people pulling up the audio editor. Also, there's no way to guarantee that the audio system isn't downsampling to 44/48kHz.

Cheers to all the UK, Slovenia, Netherlands, Swiss testers! Thanks and happy holidays :-)
