RE: World hunger can be cured with the savings from MP3 compression

Tony: "These listening tests are going in the wrong direction. If people want to experience the mental torture of listening tests, then they may as well do something useful, and do tests that might prove that more bits are useful in providing better sound, i.e. significantly more bits than are presently used to store CDs. Some of us have done these tests and realize that the CD format itself has less than 25% of the bits necessary for correct reproduction of audio."

Where are these (reputable) results suggesting we need 4x the bits?

Even if you do not believe the pooled results are valid, why not try this yourself as a challenge to see how well your ears / brain / equipment discriminate what surely must be a slam dunk! After all, the MP3 file size is only 25% of that 25% of what is "necessary for correct reproduction of audio".
