Good question Abe.

As you'll see from the package, the file sizes are actually very similar when encoded in FLAC. MP3 and FLAC algorithms go about the job very differently obviously and the resulting MP3 decoded WAV is generally no more easy/difficult to encode in FLAC as the original.
