Not always... RE: DSD is signifcantly better sounding than PCm conversion IMHO.

I really don't know why some folks have this great love affair with DSD. I still think DSD64 is suboptimal and the noise shaping does impair the upper treble range.

Also, what's the big deal with transient response? Sure, sampling in the MHz range buys transient response... But does this actually lead to noticeable difference in actual music quality? It looks good on an oscilloscope but I highly doubt any human ear/brain cares above something like 50kHz sampling rate.

Here's an interesting review of the Mytek recently:
http://www.hifi-advice.com/mytek-192DSD-review.html

Look at the description in the "High sample rate WAV/FLAC/DSD Playback" section of DSD playback. Although I don't necessarily agree with some of his other comments, that subjective sense of "roundness" I concur with in terms of SACD playback. I've noticed this phenomenon when taking 24/192 files and making SACD-R's out of them with Saracon for PCM --> DSD for example. They sound good, but sometimes it's as if the image is antialiased and smoothed out, losing some of the crisp detail as a result. One could of course blame Saracon for this (doubt it though given how good it is in general).

A number of years ago, I think Steve Hoffman put up a post comparing a studio feed, CD, vinyl, and SACD. As I recall, the SACD (DSD64) was actually felt to be colored... I can't find that post any more; maybe it has to do with the fact that Analogue Productions make SACD disks these days ;-).
