Hang on... If the pre-amp is doing the volume control, how then is it a problem that the Touch is the cause for the "fuzzy" sound at low volume since you're not even using the device's digital volume control? Isn't it a problem with the preamp that it loses definition with volume attenuation?

I would suggest you borrow a DAC or have an audiophile friend who might be nice enough come by to test out your theory about a better DAC first. When you say "low level" listening, how low are we talking about? Low volume listening IMO would decrease the need for an expensive DAC since at least in terms of dynamic range, you're handicapping what the DAC is capable of.
