Great topic :-)Q1. Will you still be reading this forum and posting here?
A: Probably... I think I've been reading here since 2002.Q2. Will you still be using a general purpose computer to play music? Or a closed, packaged system like the Bryston, Auraliki or Linn products? Or maybe back to a CD player or a turntable?
A: I've never used a general computer for actual playback for my main system - at most I've used the computer server to stream to my Transporter, SB Boom, SB3, SBT.I don't think there will be a need to change in 3 years unless something much better comes out (I see nothing down the road of interest). I already have access to the music with the iPad and Android tablet/phone. 24/96 IMO is also good enough.
Remember the hype around 2000 with SACD and DVD-A and high-res + multichannel music? Look at the state of SACD and DVD-A today, about 10 years later. IMO in 3 years, there will be no change especially if the economy continues in this path. More music downloads from HDTracks, more 24/96+ Blu-Ray music maybe, but that's about it IMO. DSD64 is unlikely to make major market penetration (doesn't bring much to the table anyways). DSD128 is less plausible than 24/192 to make major headway.
Q3. If you're still here, what topics will be of interest to you?
A. Not sure what would be interesting to me in 3 years... I think a good sounding multichannel HDMI DAC/pre-amp is the way forward for me. Maybe something like the Transporter that can take streamed 24/96+/5.1 uncompressed audio and convert it to HDMI output to a multichannel DAC would make the most sense to me sonically.
(Addendum: Who am I kidding? In 3 years, I bet we're still debating which USB 2.0 cable is best ;-)
