DLNA and gapless

One con that applies to the majority of DLNA devices is they usually don't support gapless playback. Gapless playback requires explicit support in the DLNA renderer (playback device software or firmware) and controller software or firmware (the remote, be it a laptop, smart phone etc.).

This all gets back to a DLNA API (application programming interface) that's not required and often not implemented called SetNextAvTransportURI(). Linn claims that the concept behind SetNextAvTransportURI() is highly flawed, which led them to implement their own gapless support that's not part of DLNA. They have apparently released it as open source, but I'm not aware of any vendors besides Linn that have implemented it in playback devices, though it is supported by some controller software. There's a nice discussion of SetNextAvTransportURI() in the JRiver forum . JRiver implements it, and if you use it with a player that supports it in a non-buggy way, it will work. Information about which players support it correctly (if at all) is sketchy.
