AbeCollins: "In my ideal world, Apple would make AAC and AIFF available for download, and I wouldn't mind paying a slight premium for AIFF. I rarely download from iTunes except for a couple singles where I didn't want to buy an entire CD. And of course the music videos do not offer the best audio quality but it's listenable."
I suspect the day will come when you can download lossless formats from Apple. The problem I fear is the format's going to be some kind of super-duper DRM'ed ALAC or you'll only be able to download it to some kind of device that's going to be a one way street. Apple is not about sharing content they you bought & (presumably) own.
Prepare to be locked in or branded a pirate if you dare attempt to break the DRM.
