Gotta agree with Scrith... RE: OK, but...

Totally agree with Scrith here...

I see Tony sometimes goes into detail with theory but doesn't provide the framework to answer whether it's relevant or not. No folks, NOT EVERYTHING IS RELEVANT for mere computer audio.

For the folks who are not aware, memory bandwidth is way overkill these days for audio applications unless you're running some mega-DSP processing over the computer. The slowest DDR3 RAM is capable of > 6GB/sec transfer rate and DDR2 > 3GB/sec a few years back. A 5-minute 24/96 track is only about 100MB for pop/rock, and usually less for classical.

If there's any problem with FLAC decoding, it's got to do with CPU being bogged down with other tasks. Heck, I've run stuff like real-time resampling to simulate apodizing filters in and out with FLAC with less than 25% peak CPU usage on a reasonably fast computer about 5 years old.
