I agree... But... RE: "Need" is not to be confused with "Want".

Given that this is an audiophile board, surely 8-bit, 8kHz is neither something anyone here would need or want :-)

I remember the days of the Commodore Amiga where 8/8 was essentially all we got with the low pass filter in place - good memories but obviously bad quality. Nonetheless, I remember being *astounded* by how impressive mp3 was squeezing the whole Madonna song "Holiday" into just a few megs - first mp3 song I ever downloaded off Usenet!

The problem with audiophilia is that for those most severely afflicted, the terms "want" and "need" become one and the same to the point where it's completely unjustified by any known science. Not to say science explains everything, but I guess I'm lucky that my ears/brain seem to conform to expectations based on scientific predictions about audio quality.

IMO my friend's suggestion of 24/50 is *likely* all that a human audiophile with normal physiology both need and "should" want. However, being obsessive perfectionists, we want the ideal (ie. infinite resolution) which is completely unnecessary for listening with all the pleasure the music can afford in this mortal shell.
