You obviously didn't read the reference that I linked.
The information can be put in there and gotten out. Do the math, there are more bits in 96/16 than in 44/24. (Hint: 96*24 = 1536, 44*24 = 1056.) Even 96/12 can yield results with more resolution than 44/24.
To do this, I started with a 96/24 recording and then applied noise shaped dither to produce a file that was in the 96/16 (or 96/12) format. This file was then played back by converting it back to 96/24 before sending it to my DAC. The 96/24 original was also converted to 44/16 and that file was played back for comparison.
