Yes, by all means rip CD's in a *bit perfect* fashion so you don't have to do it again. Whether keep them as FLAC, ALAC, APE, WV (lossless compression formats) or keeping as WAV IMO doesn't matter.On a PC you can easily convert between them with something like DBPowerAmp in seconds. The beauty of something like FLAC or ALAC is that you can tag the music files with the song names, artists, albums, genre with a program like Mp3tag. Even more convenient is that ripping software like dbPowerAmp will fill in the fields for you and grab cover images from the Internet (remember that WAV does not have this tagging ability). The tags are nicely read and organized by the Squeezebox server (Logitech Media Server).
Happy new year & good luck with the build! There's little need to obsess with the computer if you're going to be streaming to a Squeezebox other than maybe thinking about how to keep the server machine quiet, unobtrusive, and the network speed up especially if you're serving as uncompressed.
