That's my point. Since physiological and emotional phenomena are comparatively poorly understood, and there exists disparate opinions (obviously not everyone hears a difference), then why do we jump on the belief that a USB cable is the source of the perceptual difference?

I maintain that it's literally "in the ear of the beholder". Some people hear the difference and are happy to pay exorbitant amounts for something they perceive as good, others feel it's a rip-off.

The OP didn't detect a difference, came to the conclusion that significant changes in length didn't make a difference and questioned if USB cables are a big deal... Clearly not exhaustive research but not unreasonable. Furthermore, he made a good observation that digital volume attenuation in Windows sucks. Can't disagree.
