I agree with your comments Regor,
16/44 is excellent and the comment above about "Cafe Blue" is consistent with this line of thinking. If only more studios would utilize all the potential quality available rather than compressed the music to death. In fact, going to 24 bits and higher sampling rate is philosophically incompatible with what the studios seem to be trying to achieve in most modern recordings (at least non-classical / jazz).

It makes even less sense to release ancient stuff from the Rolling Stones on HDTracks when some of them clearly are not recorded for high fidelity reproduction - have a listen to "60's UK EP Collection" for a ridiculous example (they even have the audacity to sell this at 24/176 LOL)!

A couple of years ago, I ABX'ed 24/96 tracks downsampled to 16/44 (dithered in Adobe Audition) then resampled back to 24/96 to try to make apple-to-apple comparison to see if I lost anything by truncating things down. I was *unable* to ABX the difference whatsoever.

Of course this could be due to equipment limitations but the lack of a clearly discernable difference I think will keep high-res out of the mainstream for the forseeable future as something deemed desirable... Other than impressing audiophiles with high numbers, the general public WILL NOT PAY MORE for this. I think we're in an interesting time in history where the studios might push hi-res again to monetize the psychological impact of the specs (since DVD-A and SACD for the most part have failed). I don't think it will last long.
