The two biggest factors that affect the sound quality are the sampling rate, and which encoder was used.Personally, I'm quite happy with 160Kbps or better. I can't distinguish between CD quality and 192Kbps (at least, not with my ears / equipment).
A lot of encoders are set to record at 128Kbps, with a cut off at 15804Hz, and this causes certain artifacts (that 'tinny' sound) to come through if you use a bad encoder.
160Kbps is usually 20129Hz, and 192Kbps is 22050Hz (apparrently CD quality).
Most stuff made with the news Lame or Fraunhofer encoder sound pretty good. I invite you to compare for your yourself, go to "Files" in my Yahoo Group. There's 4 versions of part of Miles Davis "So What", from an original CD (Columbia), encoded with the Fraunhofer IIS engine.
