There is a time to blend and a time to remain distinct, a matter that is generally dictated by the composer. Some string quartets go their own way on this. I have always found that the Takacs tend to ignore the composer and play music with distinct voices, though that's not exactly how I'd describe it, -- no matter, creating a somewhat analytic sound. This kills their recent recording of Britten's Qt. No. 3. My Takacs problem is not shared by anyone else I know. Even their much praised Bartok seems to have had its life drained. Eh?
