I just came from hearing an all Brahms program in a great venue by an orchestra, conductor and soloist hitting on all cylinders. I am talking about Christian Thielemann the Staatskapelle Dresden and Lisa Batiashvili. They led off with the Academic Overture followed by the Voilin Concerto and then the Symphony 4. There were also a few encores. The VC was the highlight and Lisa is amoung a long list of the very best virtuosi currently playing. I had just received the CD of the VC today and listened to it several times before attending the concert. I was never a huge Brahms fan but I didn't realize what I was missing. I am guessing that I shouldn't be too hard on my system. I think the weakest link is attempting to record a large scale orchestra. To capture what is heard in a great venue with flawless acoustics must be near impossible.
I guess I will try and attend more concerts of the great composers that I haven't quite appreciated so I can get my teeth into them. Next up, Mahler.
